Measure the consequence before trusting a model signal
A byte model can be confident that the next symbol is a digit while missing the calculation that determines its value. A structured judgment can fit its required format while changing a program’s action. Several accurate observers can still fail together.
These studies suggest a practical sequence: identify the decision, then test the output or behavior on which it depends. The relevant endpoint differs across computed answers, program decisions, and the benefit of acting with shared errors. Each finding belongs to its own tested setting.
What you will understand
Why can a confident prediction of the next byte miss a computed answer?
How can an evaluator tell whether changed model output alters a decision the program uses?
Why can observers with similar individual accuracy bring different value to a team?
Predictable bytes, difficult results
Imagine a model continuing a worked solution: “16 - 3 - 4 =”. The next character is likely to be a digit, which makes its type easy to anticipate.
Choosing the right digit still requires the arithmetic in the earlier text. In the byte-model study, this gap creates a practical problem: a signal used to direct the model’s work may pass over the very result a reader wants checked. The immediate question is whether the chosen work reaches the correct number.
The model groups bytes into patches and runs its larger, context-using component once per patch. Its usual rule starts a patch where a smaller model is uncertain about the next byte.
That can direct computation toward surprising text. After an equals sign, however, the smaller model may anticipate a digit without knowing its value.
A patch start gives the following bytes a fresh global step, so the study asks where those starts fall when the available patch count is tight.
Suppose you must choose a patch rule for worked math solutions. Counting surprising bytes would describe the rule’s input signal, while counting correct computed numbers would test the result it is meant to support.
Those are different observations even within one solution. The study follows this distinction by changing where patches start and then scoring the numbers written after equals signs.
That choice of endpoint turns a plausible story about allocating computation into a test of whether the allocated computation helped with the arithmetic.
