An AI harness produces a faster consensus protocol

In plain words

Consensus lets computers keep the same data even when some machines fail. The paper introduces AI-greement, a toolkit that gives a coding agent knowledge about consensus designs, a shared structure for building them, and help checking proofs of safety.

Using it, the researchers developed A-greement for a replicated key-value store. In failure-free tests with 5% writes, it had lower average request latency than the compared alternatives, but the tests do not show how it performs in every setting.

The research

Can an AI coding agent help with consensus protocols, where a design change that speeds requests can also complicate recovery or undermine correctness?

The paper asks whether domain-specific knowledge, implementation structure, and formal checks can help agents produce a practical protocol while addressing those connected demands.

AI-greement equips coding agents with consensus knowledge, reusable implementation structure, and Lean proof support to develop and check candidate protocols.

Using AI-greement, a coding agent produced A-greement, which researchers compared with four consensus protocols on request completion latency across workloads, replica counts, and network layouts.

In six deployments with 5 or 9 replicas, A-greement had lower mean latency than the strongest mean-latency alternative on workloads with 50% and 5% writes.

The comparisons used the same workload and deployment for each protocol, supporting a performance difference under those conditions. With 50% writes, A-greement's p99 latency was higher than SwiftPaxos's.

The headline latency averages cover six deployments with 5 or 9 replicas and omit the 13- and 17-replica deployments, where individual baselines became saturated. The Lean proof establishes safety for the encoded model, which researchers must check against the intended protocol and implementation.
